Position Summary

Thales Canada, Defence & Security supports the Royal Canadian Navy through In‑Service Support (ISS) programs. Between the AOPS & JSS In‑Service Support (AJISS) and Minor Warships & Auxiliary Vessels (MWAV) programs, Thales Canada provides support to over 70% of the RCN fleet, delivering preventative and corrective maintenance, Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), program management, engineering and lifecycle material management.

Thales requires a Senior Requirements Engineer to join the requirements management team. The requirements management team ensures that contractual, technical and regulatory requirements are systematically captured, traced, verified and controlled throughout the vessel support lifecycle to establish enterprise‑wide requirements visibility, support performance incentives and maintain audit‑ready compliance documentation.

You will join the Requirements Management team in Ottawa, working collaboratively with DND stakeholders, engineering teams and integrated project teams to deliver mission‑critical requirements management capabilities.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Requirements Engineers seek to understand end‑user needs, limitations and concepts of employment for systems, and ensure they are accurately captured, analyzed, documented and maintained throughout the system lifecycle. Essential functions include:

  • Lead the elicitation, analysis and documentation of system, subsystem and interface requirements; collaborate with stakeholders to ensure requirements and related work products align with end‑user needs.
  • Ensure requirements are unambiguous, feasible, testable and verifiable; develop and maintain requirements specifications and related artefacts in the approved requirements management tool.
  • Ensure bidirectional traceability between requirements and architecture/design, verification and validation artefacts; perform and review requirements decomposition/fan‑out, including coverage and gap analysis; plan and participate in requirements reviews, walkthroughs and sign‑off activities with engineering and customer representatives.
  • Manage requirements baselines and changes, including impact analysis and configuration control.

This role leads the technical implementation of requirements management processes and tools. Typical duties include:

  • Designing and maintaining the requirements architecture in IBM DOORS/Polarion ALM and building and maintaining the Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) with bidirectional links.
  • Configuring tool modules, views and attributes and producing automated compliance reports; designing and developing interfaces between DOORS, IPESA, DRMIS and PfMS; leading complex requirements decomposition and contract amendment impact analysis.
  • Creating technical procedures for requirements flowdown and verification method assignment; mentoring intermediate and junior team members on tool usage and requirements best practices.

OBJECTIVE: To provide products and customer solutions consistent with stakeholders' needs and entity policies, and to continuously enhance engineering competitiveness.

Minimum Qualifications

  • University or college degree in engineering or a related discipline.
  • At least 12 years of professional experience in the design and integration of complex systems in commercial and/or military domains.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience with a major focus on requirements.
  • Ability to succeed in cross‑functional and multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in any of the following is considered an asset:

  • Requirements management tools such as DOORS and/or Polarion.
  • Familiarity with DXL.
  • Scripting and integration technologies: REST APIs, XML/ReqIF exchange formats, Python, database queries.
  • Experience in the in‑service support of naval platforms.
  • P.Eng designation preferred.
  • IREB Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering (CPRE) – Foundation or Advanced; INCOSE Systems Engineering Professional (SEP) or Associate (ASEP); ISO/IEC/IEEE 29148; INCOSE SE Handbook.

Special Position Requirements

Full time, standard business hours. Possibility of travel to east or west coast sites for technical support or installation onboard ships in dock.

The reference Total Target Compensation (TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target, is Total Target Cash 110,000.00 - 140,000 CAD annually. This range is one data point among many considered when making pay decisions.
